This could be the fifth time I’ve seen this flick on HBO. It’s about the Whitechapel murders in 1888 London, the case of Jack the Ripper. The title is taken from the Lusk Letter that was posted with half a kidney by someone claiming to be The Ripper.
The acting is good and, along with Black Mass, the movie helped make me a fan of Johnny Depp. What drew me back for multiple viewings, however, is the portrayal of the grittiness and squalor of a 19th century inner city. Also, the ever-present background music does an outstanding job of setting an appropriately dark mood and the characters are well developed.
Leaving adequate room for artistic and historic license (the script is based upon a serial novel by the same name), I suggest you give it a shot. You’re better off not watching it alone.

I’d only watch such a show if I had someone to protect me from bad dreams- or to kick for letting me watch it!

I’m sure you’d be too distracted by Johnny Depp to worry about anything else. 🙂
