West Point Memories

The Good Old Days

I’m watching The Eiger Sanction. It was filmed north of here and released around the time my class graduated from West Point. It brings back memories of 60 days of leave spent out here at my parents’ house. Keith Huber (now retired Lieutenant General Huber) and I would play “pushup pool” in my parents’ den – miss a shot, knock ‘em out. Around 1600 we’d get ready for another night at the discotheques. Bar hopping, lazy days at poolside, me waiting in the car at 0400 and chatting with a cop who wondered why I was sitting in a parked vehicle at that hour. I had to tell him my recently graduated classmate was scoring in the house where I was parked and I had been relegated to chauffeur for the evening.

“It’s four o’clock in the morning
Damn it, listen to me good
I’m sleeping with myself tonight”

Thank you Bernie and Elton.

Kenny Dale on the radio, Bobby McGee’s and their lighted dance floor, the Bee Gees…ah the memories. We were still young and stupid and believed our careers shone brightly ahead of us.

Ahhhh… The good old days.
